Grocery Store Shopping Tips

1. Never shop on an empty stomach – this can wreck your diet (and your budget)!

2. Make a shopping list. Review your recipes and create a list.

3. Limit processed foods. These have more sugar and sodium (required for shelf stability).

4. The majority of your food should come from the perimeter of the grocery store. These fresh foods are best with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, whole grains, low fat dairy products).

5. Don’t be afraid to include a few frozen veggies and/or fruits that sustain a longer shelf life. These are great to include in a smoothie, soup, stir fry, chili, or a low-fat casserole dish.

6. Read nutrition labels- if you’re not sure, call your dietitian.
