Let’s Swim!!

If you have various body aches and joint pain, swimming is the best exercise for you. Swimming is the only exercise that doesn’t put stress on joints because the body is buoyant in the water. If you are suffering from arthritis, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, low back pain, knee soreness, or recovering from a recent operation, swimming will help to build muscles and put your heart through a workout while being very easy on the joints.

There are various types of workouts one can do in the pool. If you want to focus on cardiovascular activity, which will help strengthen the heart muscle and burn calories, lap swimming, treading water, jogging/walking in the shallow end are examples of different types of exercises. If you want to focus more on strength training, which will help build lean muscle and increase metabolism, water weights or exercises where you are using your own body weight as resistance are great examples. If you enjoy exercising in group settings, water aerobic classes tend to focus on both strength and cardio.

Now that summer is coming to an end and cool weather is approaching, pools will become scarce. Indoor pools at a local recreation center, community center, or gym will be the best options. If the location is community and family oriented, the cost should be inexpensive. So, get going and start the search! Don’t forget to purchase goggles if you plan on splashing around!
