ORBERA™ Gastric Balloon

When it comes to weight loss, what works for one person may not work for another. With this fact in mind, the weight loss physicians at Inova Bariatric Surgical Group offer a wide range of treatment options to best suit the diverse needs and goals of our patients. When diet and exercise alone are inadequate to meet your requirements and an operation is undesirable or unnecessary, the ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System may be able to help. This FDA-approved technique is available in over 80 countries and provides a less invasive alternative to bariatric surgery. Designed to work in partnership with a healthy nutrition and fitness program, this non-surgical approach to weight loss combines multiple evidence-based methods to achieve long-lasting results.

What Is the ORBERA™ Gastric Balloon?

The ORBERA™ gastric balloon is a small inflatable device that can be non-surgically placed within the stomach. The silicone balloon is filled with a saline (salt water) solution to take up space in the stomach, causing the patient to feel full despite eating less. As a result, patients gradually lose weight and shift to healthier portion sizes. After six months, the balloon will be removed—no incisions necessary. This temporary procedure is designed to jumpstart weight loss and work in conjunction with a long-term aftercare program.

What Are the Benefits of ORBERA™?

The ORBERA™ gastric balloon offers a number of advantages for patients who want help losing weight without surgery. This procedure is unique for many reasons:

What Should I Expect from the Procedure?

Ideal candidates for the ORBERA™ system will have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40. When you arrive for your treatment, you will be given a mild sedative to help make you more comfortable. The deflated gastric balloon will be inserted down the esophagus (throat) using an endoscope and placed inside the stomach. Once situated, the balloon will be filled with saline until it reaches the desired size (typically similar in volume to a grapefruit). The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to complete or less.

The ORBERA™ gastric balloon is designed to remain in place for six months, after which point we will remove the device using a method similar to the installment. Our bariatric surgeon will first deflate and then remove the balloon. Again, only a mild sedative will likely be needed, and you should be able to return home following the treatment.

The ORBERA™ balloon is only one part of the ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System. This process also includes lifestyle, fitness, and dietary coaching from a team of experienced weight loss experts. They can provide guidance, motivation, and encouragement throughout the process, even after the balloon is removed. This innovative approach is designed to give you convenient access to the support you need to achieve and maintain your wellness goals.
